On Friday, April 17, Lupe Fiasco—Chicago’s own—took the stage in Long Beach, California, delivering a powerful and memorable performance at the annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. Known for combining high-speed racing with live entertainment, the event brought in a packed crowd, and Lupe closed out night one with a set that felt both exciting and personal.

From the start, Lupe had the crowd fully engaged. He performed a mix of classic songs and fan favorites, pulling from across his career. Tracks from Food & Liquor—his debut album released in 2006—still hit just as hard, proving how well his music has stood the test of time. His delivery was sharp, and his energy stayed consistent throughout the night, keeping fans locked in from beginning to end.

What made the performance stand out most was how he connected with the audience. Between songs, Lupe took time to talk to fans and create real moments. At one point, he recognized an Olympic medalist from his hometown and gave them a shoutout in front of the crowd. In another moment, he even serenaded an infant in the audience, showing a softer and more personal side. Even though it was his show, he made it feel like it belonged to everyone there.

Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, Lupe Fiasco has built a career not just as a rapper, but also as a teacher and speaker. That depth shows in how he performs—every word feels intentional, and every moment has meaning. Nearly 20 years after his debut, he continues to prove why he remains an important voice in hip-hop.

With Food & Liquor reaching its 20-year anniversary, Lupe is getting ready to go on a nationwide tour this May. The tour will stop in cities like Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, and will wrap up in his hometown of Chicago, bringing things full circle.

The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach takes place every year in downtown Long Beach, right along the waterfront and near the well-known Queen Mary. While the event is mainly known for racing, performances like this show how much it also celebrates music and culture.

Long Beach itself has a strong history in music, making it the perfect place for a night like this. The city has helped shape artists like Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Jenni Rivera, and Sublime. That mix of influence could be felt in the crowd, which brought together people from all backgrounds.

By the end of the night, Lupe Fiasco did more than just perform—he created a moment people will remember. Nearly two decades into his career, his ability to connect with fans and deliver meaningful music is still as strong as ever.
