Joey “60 East” Atilano Expands The Cipher Series with The Word Search Cipher, Celebrating the Artists Who Built Independent Hip-Hop

Independent hip-hop has never been defined by one sound, one city, or one path to success. It has been built by artists who created their own lanes, cultivated their own communities, and stayed true to their vision. That history takes center stage in Joey “60 East” Atilano’s latest release, The Word Search Cipher: A Word Search Journey Through Independent Hip-Hop Culture.

Following the release of The Crossword Cipher, Atilano returns with a new interactive experience that invites readers to explore the people, music, and movements that have shaped independent hip-hop. Rather than simply testing what readers already know, The Word Search Cipher is designed to encourage discovery—turning each puzzle into a starting point for learning more about the artists behind the names.

Featuring more than 50 puzzles dedicated to influential independent artists, producers, groups, and collectives, The Word Search Cipher spans multiple generations and styles of hip-hop. Readers will encounter names such as Tech N9ne, MF DOOM, Atmosphere, Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, Freddie Gibbs, Talib Kweli, Mac Miller, Joey Bada$$, Nipsey Hussle, Griselda, Run the Jewels, Hieroglyphics, Wu-Tang Clan, Jedi Mind Tricks, Pharoahe Monch, Masta Ace, Chino XL, The Alchemist, and many more.

Each puzzle offers more than a list of hidden words. Artist names, albums, songs, producers, collaborators, labels, and other cultural references are woven throughout the puzzles, creating an interactive trip through underground and independent hip-hop history. Every featured artist also receives their own page containing a short biography and a “Did You Know?” feature, giving readers context behind the music and introducing stories that may be unfamiliar even to longtime fans.

For 60, the project continues a larger mission: finding creative ways to preserve and share the culture he has spent years contributing to. As an independent hip-hop artist, author, event organizer, festival founder, and cultural curator, his work has consistently connected music with community. The Word Search Cipher takes that idea in a different direction, transforming hip-hop knowledge into something readers can interact with, learn from, and enjoy at their own pace.

The result is a book built for more than just puzzle enthusiasts. Music fans can revisit artists they grew up with. New listeners can use the book as a guide to discovering unfamiliar names. Students of hip-hop can explore the connections between artists, albums, movements, and independent music history. And anyone who enjoys a good challenge can simply pick up a pencil and start searching.

The Word Search Cipher is ultimately a celebration of the artists who refused to wait for permission to create, build, tour, collaborate, and leave their mark.

Find the names. Discover the stories. Explore the culture.

The Cipher continues—one word at a time.
