Hit-Boy has announced that he is now free from an 18-year constraining publishing deal. On Instagram, he credits the assistance of JAY-Z for getting out of the contract.

“The first CD I ever bought with my own money was The Blueprint by Jay-Z when I was 13 years old,” Hit-Boy wrote. “The first song ever released that I produced for Jay was ‘n–gas in paris.’ I remember getting a text from Hov after the song dropped and was going crazy, and he said,’ If you get me another’ ngas in paris’ I’ll get you a plane,’ jokingly.

“But today I can say he got me something more valuable than a plane or anything tangible. He helped secure my freedom from an 18-year publishing deal I was stuck in, and I can’t thank him enough for pushing that thru. Much appreciation to Desiree Perez for also making this happen — the love and respect on my end runs deep and I appreciate all the help frr.”

Fresh off the end of an 18-year publishing deal, three-time GRAMMY winner Hit-Boy is embracing a new chapter with the release of his single “What’s the Deal?” Marking his first independent drop, the track arrives alongside a striking music video directed by Daniil.

Self-produced and celebratory in tone, “What’s the Deal?” showcases Hit-Boy’s signature bounce, pairing sharp lyrics with colorful production. “Different color stones, pack of Starburst / I don’t look like a star, I look like hard work,” he raps, reveling in his longevity and grind.

The accompanying visual brings that energy to life with scenes of luxury fast cars, high-stakes card games, ice, and fashion. It’s a cinematic, elevated take on Hit-Boy’s journey from behind-the-scenes hitmaker to front-and-center artist.

“I’ve never felt more empowered as an artist… after 20 years in the game, I feel like I’m just getting started,” he shared of the release.
