Memphis has lost another rising voice from its rap scene. FastCash CMoney, born Cordney Smith, was killed in a reported shootout early Sunday morning, August 10, adding to the string of tragedies impacting the city’s hip hop community.

According to police, officers responded to calls of shots fired near Macaulay Drive and Macaulay Cove, where multiple homes had been hit by gunfire. Not long after, CMoney was discovered dead at the intersection of Maritavia Street and Georgian Drive, roughly half a mile from the original location. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains active.

CMoney was known as one half of the Memphis rap duo FastCash Boyz. His death comes just weeks before he was scheduled to complete his federal probation on September 29. His legal troubles were tied to a major federal case in which he and 17 other members of the FastCash crew were convicted of Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud and Conspiracy to Possess and Attempt to Possess with Intent to Distribute Marijuana.

Prosecutors alleged the crew defrauded a bank of more than $240,000 and plotted to distribute over 100 kilos of marijuana. CMoney served 18 months in prison before being released on probation.

The FastCash Boyz built a following across the region with their high-energy street records and collaborations with fellow Memphis artists, but CMoney’s career never fully recovered from the fallout of the case. His untimely death now leaves a void in a scene already shaped by loss.
