One of the breakout stars of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is getting his own spotlight. Daniel Kaluuya is stepping beyond the voice booth to help develop and co-write a new animated film centered on his character, Spider-Punk.
The project, currently in the works at Sony Pictures Animation, will put the spotlight on Hobie Brown, a rebellious British rocker from an alternate universe who fights crime as Spider-Man in his own anti-establishment style. While plot details are still under wraps, fans can expect the film to explore Hobie’s backstory and the gritty world he calls home.
Kaluuya is developing the film alongside writer Ajon Singh. The move marks a major step for the Oscar winner, as he helps shape the character that quickly became a fan favorite during the theatrical run of Across the Spider-Verse.
In that film, Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk stood out with his chaotic charm, punk aesthetic, and DIY attitude. The sequel followed Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) as he teamed up with a wide mix of Spider-People, including Issa Rae’s Spider-Woman, to stop the multiverse threat known as the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), who can tear through dimensions using portals on his body.
Meanwhile, Miguel O’Hara (voiced by Oscar Isaac) emerged as an opposing force, believing Miles is a danger to the fabric of the Spider-Verse and must be stopped at all costs.
The animated trilogy will conclude with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2027.
With Kaluuya leading the creative charge, the upcoming Spider-Punk film is shaping up to bring even more edge, energy, and individuality to the Spider-Verse legacy.
