Mariah Carey is never shy about speaking her mind, and her latest comments are making waves. During a recent stop at Pitchfork’s “Over/Under,” the music icon weighed in on everything from lab-grown diamonds and Labubus to Crocs and self-driving cars. But her boldest moment came when she gave her unfiltered opinion on the Recording Academy’s biggest night.
Despite being nominated 34 times and taking home 5 Grammys, the singer behind “Always Be My Baby” did not mince words. “I think the Grammys are overrated,” Carey admitted. She quickly softened the moment, adding, “But we love everybody.”
Overrated. It seems like an opinion that a lot of people share.
Her candid take comes as she prepares to roll out a new era in her legendary career. In a recent Apple Music conversation with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden, celebrating the platform’s 10-year anniversary, Carey gave fans a glimpse of what is next. “I’m trying not to tell too much about the new album,” she said. “It’s a special occasion/ Mimi’s emancipation that’s a lyric from one of my songs. What is next? The album is coming out. I don’t wanna tell too much about it because I just don’t want to reveal the whole thing. It’s finished.”
The update followed the release of her latest single “Type Dangerous,” which Carey described as a “heavy record” with “real weight to it.” She promised the project would also deliver signature Mariah ballads and revealed that a second single is on the way. “I’m very excited about it. It’s very summery. I like the beat as well,” she said.
“Type Dangerous” samples Eric B. and Rakim’s 1986 classic “Eric B. Is President,” a record Carey performed with Rakim at the 2025 BET Awards. Speaking on the collaboration, she explained how it came together in an unexpected way. “I’ve always loved ‘Eric B. Is President.’ It wasn’t something like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna flip this’ I just wouldn’t think of doing it. But then we were in this restaurant in Aspen, and they had different music on, and they played ‘Eric B. Is President,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! I love this song!’ We ended up in the studio a couple [of] months later and we did it.”
Between a fearless new single, an album on the horizon, and a willingness to call out the industry’s biggest stage, Mariah Carey continues to remind the world why she remains one of music’s most influential voices.
