NCAA Investigates 13 Basketball Players For Sports Betting

Just one day after permanently banning three players for their role in a gambling scheme, the NCAA has announced that 13 more college basketball players are now under investigation for alleged sports betting violations.

According to a Thursday press release, the cases span six different schools and include allegations ranging from betting on their own teams and opponents to point shaving and game manipulation. The schools connected to the probe reportedly include Temple, Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, North Carolina A&T, and Mississippi Valley State.

The NCAA did not release the names of the athletes involved but emphasized the seriousness of the situation.

“The rise of sports betting is creating more opportunity for athletes across sports to engage in this unacceptable behavior,” NCAA president Charlie Baker said in a statement. “And while legalized sports betting is here to stay, regulators and gaming companies can do more to reduce these integrity risks by eliminating prop bets and giving sports leagues a seat at the table when setting policies.”

With legalized gambling expanding nationwide, college and professional leagues alike have seen a growing wave of integrity concerns tied to betting — and the NCAA’s latest probe signals that it won’t hesitate to come down hard when violations are uncovered.
