Ice-T is using his voice in a new way, taking the lead as narrator for Fame and Fentanyl, a gripping two-hour documentary special set to premiere on A&E this August 25. Known for his decades of unfiltered storytelling in both music and film, the veteran rapper and Law & Order: SVU star steps into a deeper conversation about the opioid epidemic shaking the entertainment world and beyond.

Fame and Fentanyl pulls back the curtain on how this deadly synthetic drug has devastated communities, disrupted the music industry, and claimed the lives of some of the most recognized names in pop culture. But this isn’t just a reel of headlines. Ice-T brings a personal edge to the story, reflecting as someone who has lost friends and collaborators to the crisis.

“I’m not talking from a distance,” Ice-T shares in the project. “This is happening to people I knew. People who shaped the game and are no longer here.”

The film shines a light on the tragic deaths of major artists including Prince, Mac Miller, Tom Petty, Coolio, and Euphoriaactor Angus Cloud. It also revisits the 2021 loss of Michael K. Williams, whose fentanyl-laced heroin overdose reignited public awareness and sparked a new wave of national concern.

The urgency of this project is amplified by the numbers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fentanyl was responsible for over 80,000 deaths in 2023, followed by an estimated 54,000 more in 2024. These aren’t just stats. They are lives, both famous and forgotten.

While celebrity stories anchor the film’s narrative, Fame and Fentanyl is just as focused on the everyday toll. It breaks down how fentanyl use is tied to deeper layers of trauma, lack of access to care, and an underground economy that continues to operate unchecked.

More than a documentary, this is a wake-up call. Ice-T guides viewers through a cultural crisis that is too often misunderstood, glamorized, or ignored. The special challenges long-standing myths around substance use and stardom, aiming to replace romanticized addiction narratives with real stories of pain, loss, and survival.

Sounds like a serious project during a serious moment in our lives.
