Spotify is adding a new way for listeners to connect directly inside the app. The streaming giant announced it has started rolling out an in-app Messages feature that lets users send recommendations for music, podcasts, and audiobooks without leaving the platform.

The feature is launching first for Free and Premium members aged 16 and older in select markets, with a wider rollout expected. Spotify noted it will “continue building and refining the experience for more Spotify users around the globe in the months ahead.”

Still, the company stressed that its new messaging tool is meant to work alongside other platforms, not replace them. “As always, you should continue sharing Spotify content directly through your favorite platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, and more. Messages on Spotify are designed to complement these integrations, not replace them,” the company said.

Spotify believes Messages will benefit not just listeners but also creators. By making it easier to share content within the app, the company hopes to “create new fans” for artists, authors, and podcasters. Bruce Houghton, editor of music tech site Hypebot, told CNET the feature could be a big step toward making Spotify feel more like a social network. “Anything that Spotify does that makes it more like a social network and engages fans is good for artists and other creators,” he said. “The bigger win for them will be if Spotify expands Messages to also let them message their fans.”

Using Messages is simple. While listening, tap the share icon in the Now Playing screen, select a friend, and hit “send.” The recipient can accept the request, react with emojis and texts, and share content back. Messages can be accessed by tapping the profile photo in the top left corner of the app.

Currently, Messages are limited to one-on-one conversations with people you have already connected with on Spotify. That includes friends and family you’ve shared content with, created Jams, Blends, or collaborative playlists with, or those on the same Family or Duo plan. Spotify confirmed that all communication will remain subject to its rules against “illegal and harmful content” and will be safeguarded with encryption.
