Since the late ‘80s, Ice Cube has built his legacy on delivering unfiltered truth to the people, lacing his rhymes with game, grit and a call to action in the Black community. This week, the Hip Hop icon turned his attention toward another community under fire, blasting federal immigration authorities for their aggressive tactics during recent raids in Los Angeles.

In a candid sit-down on REAL 92.3 LA’s The Cruz Show, Cube didn’t bite his tongue when speaking on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “To see people disrespected like that, and the federal government being too heavy-handed, going to churches and weddings and grabbing people out of schools — it’s like, ‘Come on, man, y’all just overdoing it,’” he said. His words came on the heels of reports about Border Patrol agents, in what one official allegedly called Operation Trojan Horse, hopping out of a rented truck and detaining several people outside a Home Depot. The move drew immediate backlash from civil rights advocates and local leaders.

Cube made it clear that these tactics are shaking the foundation of public safety in L.A., especially for the city’s Latino population. “Nobody’s safe,” he stressed. “They don’t care who they grab. They want to traumatize people, too.” For many, spaces once seen as safe havens; schools, churches, family gatherings, are now shadowed by fear. “I can’t wait ’til this period is over,” Cube added. “It’s crazy to see people dragged out of their spots of refuge.”

Public outrage over immigration enforcement has been heating up since June, when mass protests erupted against former President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda, which saw the National Guard deployed alongside ICE. Cube now stands alongside a growing list of artists; from Tyler The Creator to Kehlani, speaking out against the crackdown. And for those who know his track record, this is nothing new; the same Cube who called out injustice through N.W.A.’s “F*** Tha Police” is still using his voice to fight systems built to intimidate and control.
