2 Live Crew Dropped Their Debut Album ‘2 Live Crew Is What We Are’ 39 Years Ago

On this date in 1986, Miami’s own 2 Live Crew released their groundbreaking debut album 2 Live Crew Is What We Are on their independent label, Luke Skyywalker Records.

This raw and unapologetic project laid the blueprint for the Miami bass sound while also ushering in a new era of explicit content in Hip Hop. Led by the unfiltered energy of frontman Luther Campbell aka Luke Skyywalker, alongside Brother Marquis and the late Fresh Kid Ice, the group carved out a lane that few dared to explore at the time. With raunchy titles like “Throw That Dk” and “We Want Some P*y,” the album pushed boundaries and challenged radio censors, all while becoming street anthems that defined Miami’s emerging Hip Hop identity.

Though often controversial, 2 Live Crew’s influence on both the music and the culture is undeniable. They not only helped shape the sound of Southern Hip Hop but also set legal and social precedents for free speech in music.

We salute the legendary 2 Live Crew for their fearless contribution to Hip Hop history. Rest in power to Chris Wong Won, better known as Fresh Kid Ice, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 53. The Crew’s legacy continues to echo through the culture to this day.
