Dallas rapper BigXThaPlug, born Xavier Landum, was taken into custody by Dallas police in the early hours of Friday (Aug. 22), just hours after celebrating the release of his latest project.

The 27-year-old artist was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of less than two ounces of marijuana. Authorities confirmed that he was booked following the incident, which comes on the heels of what was supposed to be a celebratory night for the rising Texas MC.

Hours before his arrest, BigXThaPlug was active on social media, promoting his album release party in Dallas’ Deep Ellum district, where he invited fans to pull up and share in the moment. The celebration quickly turned into controversy, however, as news of his arrest spread across the city and beyond.

In recent years, BigXThaPlug has built a strong following in Dallas and beyond with tracks like “Safehouse,” “Texas,” and “Mmhmm,” records that helped solidify his gritty Southern sound and earned him recognition as one of the region’s most promising voices. His buzz had been steadily growing, making the timing of his arrest a setback just as his career appeared to be reaching new heights.

At press time, further details surrounding the circumstances of the arrest and potential court dates have not been released.
