WWE fans were in for a surprise when Naomi, real name Trinity Fatu, announced during Monday Night Raw that she is expecting her first child and will be stepping away from the ring, giving up her Women’s World Championship in the process.
Speculation had already been buzzing after Naomi’s title defense against Iyo Sky was postponed the week before when she was not cleared to compete. Many worried that an injury might have cut short what was easily the hottest run of her career. Instead, the 37-year-old star had far bigger news to share.
The reveal came in creative fashion. Before her scheduled in-ring address, Raw cut to a clip from Stephanie McMahon’s podcast What’s Your Story? featuring Naomi and her husband Jimmy Uso. Just as Uso was about to drop the announcement, the snippet ended, teasing that the full episode would be released after Raw.
When General Manager Adam Pearce invited her to the ring, an emotional Naomi played the continuation of the podcast clip on the titantron, where Jimmy finally revealed, “We got a baby on the way.” The crowd erupted, celebrating the major moment with the couple.
But Naomi was not ready to leave without making it entertaining. Staying true to her villain persona, she kicked Pearce out of the ring, told the entire women’s locker room they had nine months to enjoy themselves before she returned to wreak havoc, and capped it off with her trademark evil laugh.
The moment was both heartfelt and hilarious for fans who have followed her since the early 2010s and endured her two-year absence from the company. Naomi now becomes only the second WWE woman to vacate a title due to pregnancy, joining Becky Lynch, who did the same in 2020.
The WWE Universe may be losing a champion for now, but Naomi’s announcement brought a wave of love, joy, and excitement. Congratulations go out to Naomi, Jimmy Uso, and the entire Anoa’i family as they prepare for this new chapter.
