Global superstar Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye has been profoundly honored by his hometown, receiving the prestigious Key to the City and a citywide proclamation designating July 26–27 as “The Weeknd Weekend.” These accolades recognize his immense achievements as a singer, songwriter, and producer, alongside his unwavering commitment to humanitarian work and dedication to giving back to the community that shaped him.
The honors were presented at a private ceremony attended by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, alongside youth from the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and students from Abel’s alma mater, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute. The timing is particularly poignant, coming just ahead of his anticipated After Hours Till Dawn 2025 Tour dates in Toronto on July 27–28 and August 7–8.

From Scarborough to the global stage, he has reshaped modern music while using his platform to support health and humanitarian causes at home and around the world. In a powerful gesture reflecting his commitment to his roots, The Weeknd, in partnership with Live Nation, has pledged significant support to the community. They are helping to revitalize the basketball court and bring a mobile recording studio to the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough, aiming to inspire youth and foster connections. At Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, their investment will fund a media arts and robotics computer lab, a dedicated dance and arts studio, and a sensory room for students with developmental disabilities. These initiatives are designed to unlock potential, nurture creativity, and equip the next generation with the tools to pursue their dreams.

To further commemorate “The Weeknd Weekend,” the iconic CN Tower will shine in blue and green, symbolizing his contributions to the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.
The multi-platinum, Diamond-certified artist has consistently shattered global chart records, notably becoming the first Canadian solo artist to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. Beyond his musical prowess, Tesfaye is recognized for his ardent advocacy for racial and humanitarian justice. Born and raised in West Scarborough, he co-founded HXOUSE in 2018, a Toronto-based not-for-profit creative incubator dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs and creatives.
Since 2020, The Weeknd has demonstrated remarkable philanthropy, donating over $10 million to humanitarian causes. This includes $2 million to aid the crisis in Ethiopia and $4.5 million to feed millions in Gaza through his XO Humanitarian Fund. His philanthropic endeavors also encompass 2025 fire relief efforts and a tour giveback program where $1 from every ticket sold on his After Hours Til Dawn Tour supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, providing education to 100,000 children worldwide.
