Diddy Attorney Defends Cassie Relationship As “Modern Love Story” After Conviction

Sean “Diddy” Combs and Cassie Ventura’s former relationship was described by his defense attorney as a “modern love story” despite a federal jury convicting him on two counts tied to prostitution and Ventura accusing him of rape and years of abuse.

During an interview with CBS News, Diddy’s lead attorney Marc Agnifilo doubled down on his courtroom portrayal of the relationship between Diddy and Ventura, even in the face of Ventura’s harrowing testimony. “The rape we vehemently deny,” he said. “I respect that she said that, I don’t think the jury concluded that that happened.”

He went further, suggesting Ventura fabricated the rape allegation, saying there was a “backstory” behind it.

“In terms of the drugs and the other stuff,” he added, “I think that’s what makes it a modern love story. There’s a strong tragic aspect to it. I think they really did love each other. I think she very much loved him and I know he very much loved her.”

Agnifilo also pointed to the couple’s breakup texts from 2019 as proof of their emotional connection.

“If you want some of the most beautiful writing you’ve ever seen, look at their text messages from when they were breaking up in 2019,” he said. “They’re just so heartfelt. The greatest fiction writer couldn’t really write them with the poignancy and the power knowing the tragic nature.”

That characterization didn’t sit well with Ventura’s legal team. Her attorney called Agnifilo’s remarks “a disgrace and affront” to survivors of domestic violence.

Cassie Ventura Testifies About Years Of Diddy’s Alleged Abuse

Ventura, who testified as a key witness in the federal case, accused Diddy of a decade-long pattern of physical abuse, coercion and psychological torment.

She detailed being kicked, dragged and hit with a vase in a 2016 hotel incident, which was captured on video and used as evidence by prosecutors.

She also described being forced into sex parties, which she said left her emotionally shattered and contributed to drug dependency. Ventura said she endured constant threats and sexual pressure from Diddy, which led to suicidal thoughts.

Diddy was convicted of two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution under the Mann Act. He was cleared of more serious charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking.
