Busta Rhymes Dropped His Sophomore LP ‘When Disaster Strikes…’ 28 Years Ago

Busta Rhymes’ second studio album When Disaster Strikes… dropped 28 years ago today, marking a major moment in his legendary career. Released on September 16, 1997, through Elektra Records, the project solidified Busta as one of the most unique and commanding voices in hip hop.

Coming off the success of his debut The Coming, Busta raised the stakes with an album that blended explosive energy, unmatched charisma, and standout production. When Disaster Strikes… gave fans some of his most celebrated records, including “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” “Dangerous,” and “Turn It Up / Fire It Up.” The videos, full of vibrant creativity and larger-than-life imagery, only added to Busta’s reputation as a one-of-a-kind entertainer who pushed boundaries on all fronts.

The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and eventually went Platinum, proving that Busta’s style—his rapid-fire flow, animated delivery, and larger-than-life personality—resonated with fans worldwide. More than just a commercial win, the project captured the late ‘90s hip hop sound while showcasing Busta’s ability to stay innovative and unpredictable.

Nearly three decades later, When Disaster Strikes… remains a classic in Busta Rhymes’ catalog, remembered for its impact, energy, and the way it cemented him as one of the most influential MCs of his era.
