Ice Cube is stepping into sci-fi territory with the release of the trailer for the upcoming remake of War of the Worlds, a reimagining of the H.G. Wells classic with a digital-age twist.
In this updated take on the 1898 alien invasion story, Cube stars as a top cyber-security analyst for Homeland Security, whose daily routine involves monitoring potential threats through a mass surveillance system. But when an unknown entity launches a devastating attack, his trust in the government begins to unravel. The central question: is the real threat coming from beyond or from within?
What sets this version apart is its unique storytelling approach. Much of the action unfolds through screens; phones, computers, tablets—putting viewers right inside the chaos from the perspective of modern technology. The trailer leans heavily into this immersive format, showing Ice Cube’s character navigating the crisis largely from a single desk, adding tension through isolation and digital dependence.
Joining Cube in the cast are Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and The Avengers actor Clark Gregg. Producer Patrick Aiello explained the concept behind the film: “The idea was organic. When catastrophes happen today, we experience them through our devices. That insight shaped the storytelling and tech used to create this immersive thriller.”
He continued, “For the first time ever, a studio-scale sci-fi epic has been produced using a format that places audiences inside the action through the lenses of phones, computers, and tablets. It’s a visceral, first-person experience designed for big screens in a language and format that is now natural within our daily lives.”
War of the Worlds is set to premiere globally on Prime Video on July 30.
Meanwhile, Cube has also confirmed something fans have waited on for years: a new Friday sequel is officially in the works. New Line Cinema’s COO Richard Brenner confirmed that a deal was finalized for Cube to write and star in Last Friday, the long-awaited next chapter in the cult comedy series. While no casting details have been announced, Cube’s longtime passion to continue the franchise is finally seeing daylight after years of studio delays.
