A wave of concern swept through New York Jets training camp today as newly signed quarterback Justin Fields exited practice with what appeared to be a lower leg injury.
Observers at the scene say the incident occurred during team drills, where Fields came up limping before heading to the sideline for medical attention. After a brief evaluation, the former first-round pick was helped into the front seat of a cart and taken off the field.
Following his departure, the Jets halted their 11-on-11 drills and shifted focus to special teams work. As of now, there’s been no official update from the organization on the severity of Fields’ condition.
Fields joined the Jets on a two-year, $40 million deal earlier this offseason, with the team quickly naming him their starting quarterback back in March. After a rocky tenure in Chicago and a brief stop in Pittsburgh, Fields was seen as a high-upside reclamation project who could finally find his rhythm in New York’s system.
With training camp still in its early stages, the Jets are hoping today’s scare doesn’t derail those plans. The quarterback room behind Fields includes veteran Tyrod Taylor, along with Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook.
For now, Jets fans and coaches alike are holding their breath, waiting to hear if their potential franchise leader will bounce back quickly.
