Authorities in Utah say a person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the targeted shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The announcement came during a press conference Wednesday evening, though officials stopped short of calling the individual a suspect. Earlier, FBI Director Kash Patel had posted on social media that a suspect was in custody, but Governor Spencer Cox did not use that wording, suggesting there may have been miscommunication between agencies.
As previously reported, President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Kirk had died from injuries sustained in the shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. local time during a Q&A session with students that drew hundreds of attendees, including protesters.
Graphic video from the scene circulating online appears to show Kirk being struck in the neck by gunfire. UVU later issued a statement confirming that a single shot was fired from the roof of a nearby building roughly 200 yards away, and that an individual had been taken into custody.
