Spike Lee’s newest film Highest 2 Lowest dropped on August 15, and its stars Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky have been making the promo rounds with the legendary director himself. In a sit-down with GQ, the trio discussed the making of the project, but one lighthearted moment stole the spotlight.
As Rocky asked Lee about one of his signature dolly shots from He Got Game, Washington casually reached over and slid Rocky’s watch off his wrist. Refusing to hand it back, he slipped it on and showed it off to the camera. “Yo! I’m getting robbed by Denzel right now,” Rocky laughed. Lee piled on the jokes, telling Rocky he was never getting it back and hoping the watch didn’t fit. Unfortunately for Rocky, it fit perfectly, and Washington made sure to flash it proudly.
The exchange highlighted the chemistry between Washington and Rocky, who seem to have built a genuine bond while working together. Rocky has even revealed that Washington is tapped into the rap scene, listening to DMX, Moneybagg Yo, and NLE Choppa. Earlier this year, Washington went viral after shouting out Samara Cyn and Smino’s track “brand new teeth” during a Good Morning America appearance, surprising fans with how tuned in he is to today’s hip hop.
Highest 2 Lowest reimagines Akira Kurosawa’s noir classic High & Low, with Washington portraying a Quincy Jones-style record producer at a label called Stackin’ Hits. Rocky plays his son, a rapper named Yung Felon, who finds himself caught in the chaos. The film had a short run in select theaters, but it will officially stream on Apple TV+ beginning September 5.
